After Akşener's resignation, the opposition Good Party chooses Dervişoğlu as its president
The Turkish opposition party "Good Party" (IYI) announced the election of "Mehmet Dervişoğlu" as the new president of the party, succeeding "Meral Akşener".
Dervişoğlu won the majority of votes from party delegates at its fifth extraordinary general conference in the capital, Ankara.
The result came after a competition between the parliamentary bloc leader of the Good Party, "Koray Aydın," and the deputy parliamentary bloc leader, Mehmet Dervişoğlu, in the third round of the party presidency at its extraordinary conference.
Dervişoğlu received 661 delegate votes, while Aydın received 548 votes, out of a total of 1159 valid votes.
Meral Akşener, the leader of the Good Party, had resigned following the party's massive defeat in the first local elections it contested, which did not result in the party winning any municipalities.
Akşener called for an extraordinary general conference following the unsatisfactory results of the party in the local elections, scheduled for the 31st of 2024, announcing that she would not nominate herself for the party presidency.
At the beginning of this April, Akşener delivered a "self-critical" speech at the headquarters of the Good Party, thanking the people.
Akşener said, "We have once again seen how tired our people are of being trapped between two hands."
She pointed out that the low voter turnout in the local elections cannot be ignored.
