A Turkish Innovation to Eliminate Mosquitoes Using Ultrasonic Waves

A professor of bioengineering at Gebze Technical University has successfully developed a device that generates ultrasonic waves on the surface of the water to eliminate mosquitoes in their developmental stages.

Technical Engineering Professor Hakan Oflaz said he has successfully developed a device known as the "Ultrasonic Mosquito Control Device - Ultrasonic Dalga Cihazı."

The device generates ultrasonic waves on the surface of the water to eliminate mosquitoes in their developmental stages (eggs, larvae, and pupae) without the need for pesticides or biological agents.

Oflaz explained that mosquitoes lay eggs and larvae on the surface of the water, and this is one of the most important stages that can be targeted for elimination. The device generates an ultrasonic mechanical wave that causes a deformation in the surface of the water, disabling these eggs and larvae in seconds.

He added, "In experiments conducted in Ege University laboratories, the device achieved nearly 100% effectiveness on stage 3 larvae and 99% effectiveness at stage 4, the final stage of development before adulthood."

The device is an environmentally friendly solution, as it does not contain chemicals or have any negative effects on animals or humans. It can be used in large agricultural areas such as rice fields, where mosquitoes breed abundantly and the environmental impact of pesticides is significant.

It is worth noting that the project won a gold medal at the TÜRKPATENT ISIF'25 Innovation Fair.
