Türkiye Space Project to Send Two Spacecraft to the Moon in 2029
The President of the Middle East Technical University (METU) In Türkiye revealed the university's plans to send two lunar exploration vehicles (ROVs) to the Moon by 2029.
The university's president, Professor Ahmet Yozgatligil, explained the two vehicles, named "CHERI."
He stated that they were 80% developed locally and will operate on the Moon's southern surface, where environmental conditions are extremely harsh, ranging from minus 160 degrees Celsius to plus 80 degrees Celsius. The rovers will use artificial intelligence techniques to map the lunar surface in three dimensions and collect accurate scientific data.
According to METU President Professor Ahmet Yozgatligil, the project is being implemented in cooperation with the Chinese Space Agency, and the two vehicles will be transported to the Moon as part of a Chinese mission scheduled for 2029.
He added, "This is the first time in the world that two lunar vehicles capable of communicating directly with each other have been sent to operate in such a harsh environment."
He pointed out that more than 50 faculty members and students are participating in the project, emphasizing that the design and technologies used in the two vehicles, including the wheels and sensors, were developed locally, giving the project a high degree of reliance on local expertise.
