Istanbul Bans Forest Access During Summer – Here’s What’s Allowed
The Istanbul Governor’s Office has announced a ban on entering forested areas during the summer months. The decision also prohibits lighting fires for things like barbecuing, using gas canisters, or smoking hookah in the forests.
According to the statement, the ban will be in effect from June 23 to October 15, 2025, as a preventive measure to reduce the risk of wildfires.
Authorities explained that the summer season brings a lot of traffic—both people and vehicles—into forest areas, increasing the chances of fires due to carelessness or unsafe behavior.
This strict ban is backed by Turkish Forest Law No. 6831 (Article 74), and Local Administration Law No. 5442 (Articles 9 and 66).
What’s Not Included in the Ban
The ban doesn’t apply to public parks, natural recreation areas, or eco-tourism spots. People can still barbecue and hang out in those areas, as long as they follow safety rules and stay out of restricted zones.
The statement made it clear: no fires are allowed in or near forests, including in villages and neighborhoods close by. That means no burning weeds or cleaning up fields with fire either.
Nearby industrial facilities must also take serious precautions.
Energy companies have to maintain power lines and take steps to prevent any sparks or accidents—cutting the power if needed.
Municipalities will build protective zones around waste collection areas near forests, and keep heavy-duty equipment ready in case of emergency.
One exception: people can enter restricted forest areas to feed stray animals, but only if they get prior permission from security officials and the forestry department. Even then, no fires or recreational activities are allowed.
