Turkey is preparing to require social media users to verify their identity

Turkey’s Justice Minister, Akin Gurlek, said the government is preparing a new law that would force people to officially verify who they are before posting any comments or content online.

He explained that anyone who wants to use social media platforms will have to prove their real identity before they can post anything.

He also أكد that in the future, it won’t be possible to use fake or anonymous accounts—whether from inside or outside Turkey—without linking them to a verified identity.

Gurlek said the goal of this step is to “reduce anonymous accounts that spread misinformation or harmful content,” adding that knowing a user’s identity means they can be held legally responsible for what they post.

The law is still being prepared and hasn’t been put into effect yet. It’s expected to be discussed before it’s officially approved.
