Turkey’s Migration Authority announced in a statement that there are 8 situations where foreigners can be refused entry at border crossings.
They also stressed that entry decisions are made on the spot based on a legal assessment by the relevant authorities.
According to the official rules, travelers must have a valid passport or travel document that’s good for a sufficient period. Depending on their nationality, they may also need a visa. In addition, they must be able to clearly explain the purpose of their visit, whether it’s tourism, studying, or work.
The authority listed the main reasons that could lead to being denied entry:
- Not having a valid passport or recognized travel document
- An expired visa or using a visa incorrectly
- Having a previous entry ban to Turkey
- Giving unclear, inaccurate, or unconvincing information about the purpose of the visit
- Not being able to show proof of accommodation in Turkey
- Not having enough money to cover the stay
- Suspicion of trying to work without an official permit
- Violating residency rules during previous visits or overstaying a visa
The authorities also explained that the decision to deny entry is made immediately at the border after checking the traveler’s data in security and immigration systems. In some cases, a temporary entry ban may also be imposed depending on the violation.
Finally, the Migration Authority advised travelers to make sure they meet all entry requirements before heading to Turkey, especially if they’ve had previous issues with visas or residency, to avoid being denied entry upon arrival.
