Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has announced the allocation of 15,000 additional housing units for subsidized rental, aimed at low-income citizens and other eligible applicants.
Following a Cabinet meeting, Erdoğan revealed that applications would soon open for government-subsidized rental housing in Istanbul. He also announced an extension of the well-known financial support program for renovating buildings and reducing earthquake risks.
Erdoğan clearly outlined the implementation timeline, saying: “We will officially start accepting applications for our rental housing on September 14, and, God willing, we will hold the draw for the first 1,000 housing units in October.”
He stressed that the main goal is to offer these apartments to citizens at affordable, carefully calculated rents that are significantly lower than prevailing market prices, providing families with a safe housing option amid soaring real estate costs.
The government’s latest move is part of the nationwide “Turkey, the Land of Homeowners” campaign, which aims to build 500,000 social housing units across all 81 provinces. The first homes are officially scheduled to be handed over to eligible beneficiaries in March 2027.
It is worth noting that the official data released so far has not yet specified the eligibility criteria or detailed requirements for applying for the rental housing. Authorities have also not disclosed the expected rental prices for these apartments or provided a direct comparison with current average rents in different neighborhoods across Istanbul.
