Dolmash

Dolmus: A unique experience that suits Istanbul's fast pace

Along the vibrant streets of Istanbul, the "Dolmuş" remains a favorite mode of transport for many, not only for its flexibility but also for being an integral part of the city's identity.

These small buses, which operate as shared taxis, offer a unique and direct travel experience that perfectly matches Istanbul's fast-paced rhythm.

What is a Dolmuş and How Does It Work?

A Dolmuş is a private transportation service that operates as a shared taxi.

The Turkish word means "full," and this perfectly describes its principle: it only departs after all seats are occupied. It has fixed routes but gives passengers the unique flexibility to get on and off at any point along the way, making it an ideal choice for reaching destinations not served by larger buses.

Key Features:

  • Fixed Route: Each Dolmuş has a specific route clearly written on its front window.
  • Flexibility: You can ask to get off at any point on the route by simply saying "İnecek var."
  • No Fixed Schedule: The Dolmuş does not adhere to a timetable; it departs once all seats are filled.
  • Departure Points: There are specific Dolmuş stations in each neighborhood that serve as main departure points.

Dolmuş Fares

Dolmuş fares have seen a significant increase in recent years, moving it away from being a purely economic mode of transport to a convenient option for comfort and quick access.

  • Standard Fare: Fares vary based on the distance and route. On average, short-distance fares start from 26 to 30 Turkish Lira, and can increase to over 60 Lira for long-distance trips or those that cross the Bosphorus bridges.
  • Student Fare: Students receive a discount, and their fare is significantly lower than the standard rate. For example, a student fare might be around 15 Lira on some short routes.
  • Children: Children under the age of six are free of charge in most cases.

Payment Method:

Although cash payment is still the most common method and is preferred by drivers, some newer Dolmuş lines have started accepting payment via the Istanbulkart but this is not yet widespread across all areas.
