Traditional Menengiç Coffee: A Centuries-Old Heritage in Gaziantep
Visitors from across Turkey are flocking to the historic southeastern province of Gaziantep to sample traditional Menengiç coffee, prepared using methods passed down through generations amid an atmosphere steeped in local heritage and culture.
Menengiç coffee is one of the most famous traditional caffeine-free beverages in the Turkish city of Gaziantep.
It is made from the roasted fruits of the wild terebinth tree, a species related to wild pistachio, and is usually served with milk or water. In 2024, it was granted Protected Geographical Indication status by the European Union.
Preparing Menengiç coffee is an appealing ritual in itself. The drink is traditionally brewed in specially designed copper coffee pots over a low wood fire. This traditional preparation method has drawn many visitors, prompting long queues outside historic cafés and shops as people wait to enjoy a cup.
