Turkey Introduces Strict New Rules for Seniors Renewing Their Driver’s Licenses

The Turkish government is preparing to introduce a stricter new system for senior citizens when renewing their driver’s licenses. The move is aimed at improving road safety and tightening medical check requirements.

Under the proposed changes, drivers aged 65 and older will have to renew their licenses every three years and submit a medical report confirming that they are fit to drive.

Drivers over the age of 80 will be required to renew their licenses every two years under the same medical conditions.

The new rules will also tighten oversight of regular health examinations. Driver’s licenses will not be renewed unless applicants provide a medical certificate proving they are physically and mentally capable of driving.

The proposed regulations also include a review of the requirements for commercial vehicle drivers, including the maximum age limit. In addition, professional qualification certificates will become mandatory for drivers working in this sector as part of efforts to raise road safety standards.

Officials stressed that the goal of these measures is not to prevent elderly people from driving, but to ensure their health is monitored regularly, since age-related health changes can affect reaction times and driving ability.
